Wootan BiographiesDr. Kumares C. Sinha
Dr. Kumares C. Sinha, the Edgar B. and Hedwig M. Olson Distinguished Professor of Civil Engineering at Purdue University, personifies the kind of individual for whom this award was intended. His contributions to university transportation education and research have been extensive and have touched many students and professional colleagues.
Kumares Sinha received his Ph.D. in civil engineering from the University of Connecticut in 1968 and began his academic career at Marquette University. For 20 years, he served as head of the Transportation and Infrastructure Systems Engineering Department at Purdue University, and for the past 10 years as the Director of the Joint Transportation Research Program between Purdue and the Indiana DOT.
At Purdue, he developed and taught a wide variety of transportation courses, with particularly noteworthy innovations in teaching infrastructure planning and management and highway infrastructure management systems. In recent years he has become recognized for his innovative and cutting edge research on road infrastructure deterioration and its impact on agency and user costs. This research has provided the basis for many of the road and bridge management systems in use today. During his time as an educator at Purdue University, he has supervised 41 Ph.D. candidates, 21 post-Doctoral and Visiting Scholars, and 167 M.S. students, as well as numerous undergraduates.
Kumares Sinha has influenced many transportation organizations with his extraordinary record of professional leadership. He was instrumental in founding the ASCE Transportation and Development Institute, and he recently served as its President. As the Editor-in-Chief of the ASCE Journal of Transportation Engineering for over 20 years, he has transformed it into a premier publication in the field. As a member of the Technical Activities Division Council of TRB, he played a key role in changing the Transportation Research Record into an archival journal. As the President of the Council of University Transportation Centers, he instituted the program to recognize the best graduate research work in the transportation field. He also recently completed a term as the President of the Research and Education Division of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association.
It is with great pleasure and respect that the Council of University Transportation Centers awards to Dr. Kumares C. Sinha the CUTC Award for Distinguished Contribution to University Transportation Education and Research.
