Wootan BiographiesDr. Joseph M. Sussman
Dr. Joseph M. Sussman, the JR East Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Engineering Systems at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has had an enormous career-long impact on transportation research, practice and education. Early in his career, he conducted research into rail systems reliability, operations, maintenance and optimization, leading to a national reputation in these areas and a significant impact on the railroad industry. Later, he was one of the leaders that established the U.S program in Intelligent Transportation Systems, and subsequently served as a member of the core group that produced the Strategic Plan for IVHS America.
In the mid-1980s, Joe Sussman served as chairman of the MIT Department of Civil Engineering, where he strengthened existing and created new interdisciplinary transportation programs. He then directed and developed the MIT Center for Transportation Studies, broadened its multidisciplinary scope, greatly increased its research volume and propelled the Center to national leadership.
Joe Sussman continues to be a catalyst for improving transportation education, proposing masters programs with "T shaped" curriculums (breadth and depth) to educate transportation professionals. He has authored a widely respected graduate textbook entitled "Introduction to Transportation Systems."
Joe Sussman has been a leader and sought-after advisor by a number of important transportation policy groups. He was Chairman of the TRB Executive Committee in 1994, chaired the TRB Committee for Oversight of the FRA R&D Program from 1996 to 1999, and has served on the Board of ITS America since 1995. He currently conducts research in transportation systems and sustainable transportation.
