Biographies

Dr. C. Michael Walton

Dr. C. Michael Walton is Professor of Civil Engineering and holds the Ernest H. Cockrell Centennial Chair in Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin (UT) as well as a joint academic appointment in the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs. His research and professional interests have been in the areas of transportation systems engineering and planning, freight transport systems, ITS and transport policy. He and his graduate students have contributed more than 250 publications stemming from their research.

He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, member and a past chair of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Executive Committee, and an ex-officio member of the Governing Board of the National Research Council (NRC). Currently he serves as the Senior Vice Chairman of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) and a member of the Board of Governors of the Transportation and Development Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He was a founding member and former chairman of the Board of the Intelligent Transportation Society (ITS) of America, a member of the American Society for Engineering Education, Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences, Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), International Road Federation, National Society of Professional Engineers, Society of American Military Engineers, and Urban Land Institute.

Professor Walton has received various honors and awards such as the Outstanding Projects and Leaders (OPAL) Award (ASCE); America’s Top 100 Private Sector Transportation Design and Construction Professionals of the 20th Century (ARTBA); George Bartlett Award (AASHTO, ARTBA and TRB); Deen Distinguished Lectureship (TRB); Carey Distinguished Service Award (TRB); Francis C. Turner Lectureship (ASCE); James Laurie Prize (ASCE); Harland Bartholomew Award (ASCE); Frank Masters Transportation Engineering Award (ASCE); Steinberg Award (ARTBA); and Wilbur Smith Distinguished Transportation Educator Award (ITE).

He is a graduate of Virginia Military Institute and North Carolina State University. He and Betty have four children and eight grandchildren.
