Workforce Development
The Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC), in conjunction with the University Transportation Centers Program (UTCP) of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research & Innovative Technology Administration (RITA), has been working towards developing a national strategy to address the workforce challenges facing the transportation industry in the near future. The issues which must be addressed include:
- 50% of the current workforce is or will become eligible for retirement over the next 10 years
- Increased competition from other fields for a smaller pool of skilled workers
- Substantially different skill sets and abilities to respond to rapidly changing demands and a transforming industry
To address these challenges, the parties are working towards a comprehensive and widely support strategy, and that that supports the U.S. Department of Transportation’s goals for safety, livable communities, economic competitiveness, environmental sustainability, and organizational excellence.
